Agadir is a major city in Morocco, located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean near the foot of the Atlas Mountains, just north of the point where the Sous River flows into the ocean. At a distance of 508 km to the south of Casablanca, it is the capital of the Agadir-Ida OuTanane Prefecture and of the Souss-Massa economic region. A majority of its inhabitants speak Shilha/Tashelhit, a Berber language of the Atlas branch, as their first language.

The name Agadir is a common Berber noun meaning “wall, enclosure, fortified building, citadel,” a kind of characteristic fortified storehouse of the Suz region and the south of Morocco and a very close synonym of Ksar, the Arabic term that originated the Portuguese word “Alcácer.”

La majorité de ses habitants parle le berbère-tachelhit, de la branche de l’Atlas, comme langue maternelle.

Le nom Agadir est un nom berbère commun qui signifie « mur, enceinte, bâtiment fortifié, citadelle », une sorte d’entrepôt fortifié caractéristique de la région de Suz et du sud du Maroc et un synonyme très proche de Ksar, le terme arabe qui a donné naissance au mot Portugais « Alcácer ».
